Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO-DBT) is the latest behavioral treatment for people suffering with disorders of emotional overcontrol. Generally thought of as an entirely useful quality, there is a growing body of research acknowledging the problems associated with too much self-control.
In excess, perfectionism, prioritizing achievement above all else, delaying gratification indefinitely, and other “type A” tendencies can lead to significant issues including chronic depression, anxiety, and loneliness. RO-DBT is a structured program designed to restore flexibility, openness, and enjoyment of life while increasing overall effectiveness.
The RO-DBT program involves the following weekly components:
Skills Class: A 2-hour group meeting in which clients learn about the nature of overcontrol and specific skills to improve their lives. Skills are divided into the following modalities: radical openness, emotion regulation, mindfulness, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.
Individual Therapy: a 50-minute meeting in which clients integrate the skills from class and apply them to their unique issues.
Phone Coaching: clients have access to phone coaching 24/7 to support them in successfully applying their new behaviors “in the field”.
